hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an increase in melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives our skin, hair and eyes their colour. A number of factors can trigger an increase in melanin production, but the main ones are sun exposure, hormonal influences, age and skin injuries or inflammation.

Hyperpigmentation can make spots or patches of skin appear darker than surrounding areas.

Some forms of hyperpigmentation, including melasma and sun spots, are more likely to affect areas of skin that face sun exposure, including the face, arms, and legs.

Other types of hyperpigmentation form after an injury or skin inflammation, such as cuts, burns, acne, or lupus. These can occur anywhere on the body.

Although hyperpigmentation is usually harmless, some people for aesthetic reasons wish to get rid of it.

To prevent hyperpigmentation: or to stop it becoming more prominent:

Avoid exposure to the sun: use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect the skin and stop hyperpigmentation from becoming darker. SPF should be reapplied every 2 hours.

Avoid picking at the skin: to prevent hyperpigmentation from forming after an injury, avoid picking at spots, scabs, and acne.

  • A burning or stinging feeling when using water or skincare products
  • Tiny broken blood vessels that do not go away may appear on your skin
  • You may get small pink or red bumps. Sometimes these become filled with a yellowish liquid
  • dry skin
  • swelling, especially around the eyes

 Eczema

There are many types of Eczema and Atopic Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is the most common form, a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry, cracked and sore.

Some people only have small patches of dry skin, but others may experience widespread inflamed skin all over the body.

Inflamed skin can become red on lighter skin, and darker brown, purple or grey on darker skin. This can also be more difficult to see on darker skin.

Although Atopic Eczema can affect any part of the body, it most often affects the hands, insides of the elbows, backs of the knees and the face and scalp in children.

People with Atopic Eczema usually have periods when symptoms are less noticeable, as well as periods when symptoms become more severe (flare-ups).

The cause of Eczema is unknown.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scales.

These patches normally appear on your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on your body.

Most people are only affected with small patches. In some cases, the patches can be itchy or sore.

Psoriasis affects around 2% of people in the UK. It can start at any age, but most often develops in adults under 35 years old, and affects men and women equally.

The severity of Psoriasis varies greatly from person to person. For some it’s just a minor irritation, but for others it can majorly affect their quality of life.

Psoriasis is a long-lasting (chronic) disease that usually involves periods when you have no symptoms or mild symptoms, followed by periods when symptoms are more severe.

Cosmetic procedures available at The Lux Clinic for Psoriasis include:

acne

Acne is a chronic multi-factor infectious disease of the sebaceous glands. The chronic disease requires consistent treatment as long as the disease is active.

There are five causes leading to the development of Acne:

  • Excessive discharge of the sebaceous glands (oily)
  • Excessive (hyper) keratosis in the hair follicle channels (oily)
  • Changes in skin pH (less acidic) (over exfoliating)
  • Bacterial infection
  • Development of inflammation (heat, redness, swelling)

In each condition of Acne, several or all of the factors may occur. For example, when excessive discharge of the sebaceous glands and changes in sebum structure are combined with hyper-keratosis (clogging of dead skin cells), Acne Comedonica develops.

In order to treat Acne, it is necessary to use the right combination of home care ingredients, to fight all symptoms of Acne, combined with a specific in-clinic session routine.
